United Way Will Host 4th Habitat Build
On March 23, 2010, Wachovia, a Wells Fargo Company, announced its $35,000 grant contribution to fund the entire United Way and Habitat for Humanity build at Ben Court subdivision, Graham, in early October. In addition to donating funds, Wachovia is also providing volunteer labor. Wachovia is able to utilize Wells Fargo's Team Member Volunteer Program (TMVP), which is an initiative that combines employee volunteer hours with financial support. This will be the second year that United Way and Habitat for Humanity have benefited from this program. The majority of the funds are provided by Wells Fargo Housing Foundation as part of the TMVP progrm and the rest of the funds will come from the Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation. With the help of Wachovia and Wells Fargo volunteers and others from the community, from October 1 to October 15, more than 250 volunteers representing 20 companies will unite to construct the house. Each day, local businesses will provide lunch, snacks, and drinks to each volunteer.

Help Stamp Out Hunger
Now in its 18th year, The Stamp Out Hunger! drive is a nationwide effort to provide food to local food banks and pantries. This effort is the country's largest single-day food drive, and has collected almost one billion pounds of food since its commencement in 1993. Last year, Alamance County collected 23,000 lbs of food!
Â
To help Stamp Out Hunger! this year, simply leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods next to your mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on Saturday, May 8. Food items should be in non-breakable containers such as boxes and cans. Letter carriers will collect the donations as they deliver the mail and take them to food banks and other hunger relief organizations.
Non-perishable food items include canned soup; canned meats and fish; canned vegetables; fruits and juices; boxed goods (such as cereal); pasta and rice.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the number of Americans living in food insecure homes increased from 36.2 million in 2007 to 49.1 million in 2008. This year, drive organizers hope to exceed last year's total of 73.4 million pounds of donated food.
Help fight hunger with your phone - text STAMP1 to 30305 for reminders about the Stamp Out Hunger! food drive on May 8, 2010.

Â
Volunteers Needed for Habitat Build
United Way of Alamance County is eager to begin construction on its third Habitat House, presented by Wachovia, a Wells Fargo Company.  Help us make Kimberlee Ann Pinnix and her daughter Cheyann's dream of owning their home come true. Over 200 volunteers are needed to complete the build scheduled for August 24 - September 4. Volunteers can expect to do everything from hanging sheet rock to painting walls. Lunch and snacks will be provided for those who work during any of the two-hour shifts. To make a differenence in the community, contact Lindsay Martin.
Â
United Way Exceeds 2008 Goal
The Board of Directors of the United Way of Alamance County is elated to announce the organization exceeded its annual goal of 1.633 million by raising over $1.645 million. As as result, most agencies received the same allocation as last year or received more money. The United Way saw the majority of its leadership givers (those giving $500 - $9,999) raise their annual gifts. Corporate Leadership gifts increased and a conscious effort to educate the community about the pros of donating money to the United Way Community Fund (funds not donor directed) seemed to work. The organization saw an increase in the percentage of donors who chose to trust United Way to allocate their money to the programs they felt needed it most. Thanks to everyone who help make this happen.
