Ask Your NC House Member to Cosponsor Nonprofit Sales Tax Exemption Legislation

Yesterday, four members of the NC House of Representatives took a big step toward remedying one of the biggest financial and administrative burdens faced by nonprofits by filing a bill (H.B. 882) to create a true nonprofit sales tax exemption in North Carolina.

Currently, North Carolina is one of the very few states where nonprofits have to pay sales tax and then apply for refunds from the NC Department of Revenue twice a year; in most other states, nonprofits are exempt from paying sales tax when they make purchases.

H.B. 822 would fix that problem. But to help this bill pass, we need your help right now. This is a truly time-sensitive request: the deadline for House members to join as cosponsors is tomorrow (Thursday, April 27) at 5 p.m.

We are extremely grateful to the bill’s primary sponsors: Representatives Allen Chesser (R-Nash), Jason Saine (R-Lincoln), Stephen Ross (R-Alamance), and Brandon Lofton (D-Mecklenburg). So far, four other Representatives – Representatives Eric Ager (D-Buncombe), John Autry (D-Mecklenburg), Pricey Harrison (D-Guilford), and Phil Shepard (R-Onslow) have signed on as cosponsors. If you are represented by any of these eight House members, please join us in thanking them for their sponsorship of the bill.

Riddell (Dennis.Riddell@ncleg.gov):
Good afternoon Rep. Riddell,

I am writing to you today to ask for your support of H.B. 822.  Currently, North Carolina is one of the very few states where nonprofits have to pay sales tax and then apply for refunds from the NC Department of Revenue twice a year; in most other states, nonprofits are exempt from paying sales tax when they make purchases. H.B. 822 would fix that problem.  This remedy would greatly reduce a burden on NC nonprofit organizations as well as the NC Dept of Revenue.
I am happy to see that Rep. Ross is a primary sponsor of the bill.  If you need any further information please let me know.
Thank you for your consideration,
XXX

Ross (Stephen.Ross@ncleg.gov):
Good afternoon Rep. Ross,
I am writing to thank you for your sponsorship of H.B. 822 regarding doing away with the sales tax reimbursement system for nonprofits in NC and instituting an exemption at the time of purchase.
This will be of great service to NC Nonprofits as well as the NC Dept. of Revenue. Currently, North Carolina is one of the very few states where nonprofits have to pay sales tax and then apply for refunds from the NC Department of Revenue twice a year; in most other states, nonprofits are exempt from paying sales tax when they make purchases. H.B. 822 would fix that problem.
Thank you,
