Williams High Accounting Students Offering Free Tax Preparation

Forty-five accounting students at Williams High School completed the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) course and are now certified to offer free basic tax return preparation to qualified individuals. This free service during March includes assistance with federal and state tax returns.

Students, under the supervision of Williams High’s VITA coordinator Mary Margaret Harris and accounting teacher Jason Cheek, are volunteering their time after school during the month of March to assist citizens who qualify and register for an appointment for the free tax assistance. Individuals may register for an appointment at Williams High School VITA by clicking here

The dates that individuals may request student assistance by appointment only are: March 9, 16, 23, and 30. Appointments are available between 4:00 and 6:00 pm in Room 227 at Walter M. Williams High School in Burlington on those dates.

This is the eighth year that Williams High students have participated in the VITA program. All students have successfully completed Accounting 1 and/or Accounting 2 or are currently enrolled in Accounting 1 or Accounting 2 Honors. Students receive credit toward their class grade by participating in the tax preparation program. Williams High School Finance Academy students planning to pursue careers in Accounting also receive volunteer credit for their participation to include on their resumes and college applications.

Last year, Williams High students prepared more than 40 tax returns for Alamance County residents that resulted in approximately $40,000 in state and federal refunds received by their clients.
