Year of the Trail Special Guest

Calling all avid Hikers & Readers! Coming up this Monday afternoon at 4pm. We have a special guest in honor of the Year of the Trail & our latest read Grandma Gatewood's Walk by Ben Montgomery. Elon Parks and Rec Book CLub

Join us Monday, February 27th from 4-5pm at Beth Schmidt Park in the Heritage Place Community Center as John Sherden will be sharing his travel experience with the group. John was 62 when he hiked the Appalachian Trail.

Emma Gatewood was a mother of 11, a grandmother of 23 when she decided to hike the Appalachian Trail which took her 145 days. It took her two tries, but in 1955, at the age of 67 Emma “Grandma” Gatewood became the first woman to solo hike the entire length of the Appalachian Trail in one through hike. Gatewood has become a legend for those who hike the trail, and in her home state of Ohio, where she helped found the Buckeye Trail.
